Darkman is an adventure game developed and published by Ocean Software. The title released in 1991 and 1992 for Gameboy, was also available for NES, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Amiga, ZX Spectrum, and Atari ST and was the first entry in a saga with two other titles.
Similar to the movie of the same name, Darkman used to be a scientist exploring applications of a new synthetic skin useful for fire victims. The investigation was interrupted when a gang of mobsters entered his lab looking for a document, killing his assistant in the middle and leaving him seriously injured. At the same time, the scientist used a new surgical treatment that granted him immunity to pain, superhuman strength, but in exchange for intense impulses of anger and adrenaline. Thus, swearing vengeance against the gang of mobsters with a bandage covering his burned face in the criminal attack, Darkman was born.
The game is a side-scrolling platformer at times, in which the main character must advance through the levels using masks of their victims, attacking enemies, and jumping obstacles. The masks are obtained in the photography mode, where the game changes to a first-person perspective and the user must photograph the criminal to copy his face. These mini-games of photographs are vital for the resolution of the platform levels since the duration of the mask in the next level will depend on the quality of the photos that the player takes.
