After the Age of Ruin, dwarves are left exiled on the surface, in a world dominated by goblins, orcs, monsters and undead, plus a few druids trying to protect animals, trees and other “green things” from the assault of others, dwarves included. Several dwarven settlements already exist and many other dwarven adventurers and workers are spread throughout the land, but one dwarf is determined to start his own settlement and restore his kin’s lost glory, defeating all enemies, exploring old ruins, recovering lost lore and artifacts, and ultimately rediscovering the way into the depths they have been ousted from.
Regions of Ruin is a platforming action RPG featuring dwarves that are faster and much more agile than typically depicted. The game world consists of the settlement and hundreds of other areas, a small number only becoming accessible after having their location discovered or mentioned by NPCs, but most requiring only spending some food to explore that particular spot on the map. A few locations are marked as sieges and function differently, offering a chance to build defensive structures and requiring to defend a location and the few other dwarves present against waves of enemies. Most areas offer a certain amount of one resource type, which can be gathered by rescued dwarven workers after the enemies are cleared.
In the settlement, buildings can be constructed and upgraded, offering storage, income, a way to learn more from the found lore or companions that can be hired, improving the attributes of companions, and allowing trading resources, the smelting of raw ore and lesser metals into stronger ones, forging or dismantling equipment, as well as disenchanting or imbuing it.
