Enter the dungeon to search and bring out the huge deposits of gold hidden in a maze of caves deep beneath the earth. The levels of the dungeon are random, as well as all the rooms and what is in each one, each time you play. The goal is to escape with as much treasure as you can, as on certain levels you can find a transporter to take you to the surface. Rooms contain a wide variety of creatures that you need to fight and overcome to gain any treasures or helpful objects they may be guarding. Movement in the game is quite straightforward, involving a single key press, which is the same for any other commands needed.
Each level is viewed from above in an overhead view, giving you details of exits and how to get through them. The dungeon levels contain three types of door that you need to pass though, which are open, secret and locked. Any character can go through a locked door, but the other types are dependent on your character and items carried.
Available choices are Warrior, Wizard, Hobbit, Dwarf, or Elf, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each character, depending on their type, will be given random attributes made up of Constitution, Strength, Life Point, Armor and Speed, and can be complimented at the beginning of the game when you select weapons, armour, and various other items to assist in your quest. Other items can be collected in the caves below. Warriors will be strong, capable of using any weapon, as can Dwarfs and Hobbits. Elves and Wizards are more limited in what they can use but make up for it by using magic and being able to pass through secret doors without any difficulties. Dwarfs and Hobbits can enter any locked door.
When running into a monster, you have a choice whether to run or fight though it’s automatically a fight if in the corridors. How you fare is dependent on the monsters strength to your constitution, as well as both your speed’s and armor. Once a monster strength or you constitution falls to zero you die, though you can normally quit the fight if you feel you are losing. It’s also possible to save the game.
